Convention Developed
Narrative, Performance and Todorov
From my research i have found that the main convention in music videos are the narrative and the performance. This is split up through the video and as i have previously explained what "makes a music video a music video". More over most music video narratives are then either follow the lyrics of the song or have no relevance to them at all. Much like tv and film however, they usually both follow Todorovs equilibrium theory. This a sort of structure that Todorovs says all stores follow. From my research i found that the theory says that story are split into three main parts; first the equilibrium where everything is good, happy and just. There is then a disruption the the equilibrium where something comes along and destroys the peace, before a new equilibrium is restored. Although my music video has an obvious narrative and performance there is many places in which they seem to intertwine and almost become the same thing. Our video to me is split into three main parts, the first is the performance where the actors preform and sing. The second is the obvious narrative where the music stops and the characters are at a magic show. The final part are the peaces in between where the characters are not lip syncing nor playing the drums. [This is really the convection that i am developing. As you listen words of the song you can really begin to understand what the it is about (how life was better for these people years ago) because of this we decided that the narrative would need to reflect this in a different way. We therefor came up with the idea of them not only looking back but almost trying to literally relive the moments when everything was better, the reason for them looking out stood on top of the half-pipe in the skate park. This dose not fit in with Todorovs theory but it is almost like they are still in the middle of it. Equilibrium was them when they were younger and they are now at the point of disruption where life seems very bad.

Three points from the narrative when they were looking back to the equilibrium.
Three points from the performance where they are in the disruption, and thinking about the old equilibrium.
In one specific part of our video we change from cutting on the beat to cutting on the off beat. Cutting on the beat is a convention of music videos as said by Vernallis. We decided to develop this by cutting on both the off beat and a piano. we did tis in specific point of our video to keep out target market of teenagers interested in the video.
This is an example of editing on the off beat.
